CODE OF EXPECTATIONS

 

As a caring and responsible student in Prince William County Schools, I pledge to:

 

  • Be respectful and encouraging to others
  • Set good examples for other students
  • Communicate openly with parents, teachers, and school staff
  • Encourage other students to make positive decisions
  • Be a role model and promote safe decision-making
  • Serve the community by conducting activities such as food drives, requesting donations when needed, etc.

BEHAVIOR

 

 

 

GP DISCIPLINARY Program

The GPMS faculty and administration reserve the right to make adjustments to this program, as needed, to better facilitate the school’s goals for student safety and achievement.  Any changes will be announced to students on the morning announcements and on the school website. 

 

In addition to the consequences outlined below, the administration may also utilize other corrective actions, including, but not limited to, written assignments, community service, counseling, anger management, and exclusion from classes/activities.


The administration and teachers at Graham Park Middle School are committed to building positive relationships with all students.  It is our belief that certain offenses can be addressed by the classroom teacher, who will utilize established best practices to correct student misconduct. 
                                                                       
Prior to a discipline referral being submitted at least two of the following interventions must be utilized: 

 

  1. Warning and parental contact
  2. Student conference and parent contact
  3. Team conference with the student and parental contact
  4. Referral to Counseling services and/or other support personnel and parent contact
  5. Per grade level, teacher assigned after-school detention with parental contact
  6. Parent, student, and teacher conference

 

Offenses and CODE OF BEHAVIOR VIOLATIONS

  • Chewing gum; candy or food; drinks (other than water in clear bottles)
  • Dress code violations
  • Improper care of school equipment
  • Inappropriate language/profanity
  • Mild horseplay (chasing, non-threatening contact, simulating contact, etc.)
  • PDA (Public Display of Affection)
  • Minor disrespect
  • Minor class disruptions (including, but not limited to the following behaviors)
  • talking without permission
  • calling out
  • inappropriate remarks
  • writing/reading/passing notes
  • -out of seat/walking around room without permission
  • throwing paper
  • making inappropriate noises

 

Corrective Measures 

  • When an offense/violation is committed, the teacher will notify the student’s parent/guardian via a documented phone call,
    e-mail, or a note in student’s agenda.
  • Reflection sheet
  • Lunch or classroom detention
  • If a student and parent receive two or more notices during a grading period, it may result in the lowering of his/her conduct grade/s.
  • If a student and parent have received 2 or more notices for the same type of offenses and continues to violate the same rule/offense, it will be referred to the office as a disciplinary referral beginning on the 3rd occurrence.   Corrective measures will then be assigned by administration according to the guidelines that follow.

 

The following Code of Behavior violations may result in a disciplinary referral submitted to administration (with or without prior intervention by the classroom teacher).

 

  • Accumulated Offenses (repeated violations of the “Code of Behavior”).
  • Attending any extracurricular activity when ineligible.
  • Blatantly offensive/disruptive language/racial slurs to include communication via social media and/or electronic devices
  • Bus violations
  • Bystanders
  • Cheating and Plagiarism
  • Disobedience (disregard or disobey any reasonable request made by a staff member)
  • Disrespect to teacher/staff member (arguing, refusal to cooperate, walking away, etc.)
  • Disruption (behaving in a disorderly manner or in any other way significantly interrupts or disrupts the orderly operations of the school)
  • Excessive horseplay (involving excessive physical contact)
  • Failure to Report Violations (lying or withholding information from administration or security during the course of an investigation.)
  • Gambling
  • Indecent Materials
  • Instigating a fight/threatening to fight (whether a fight occurs or not)
  • Significant or continuous disrespect to peers
  • Student Attendance  (cutting class/skipping class or school)
  • Truancy
  • Violations of sport, club, and activity rules

Corrective Measures 

1st Referral: After-School Detention

2ndReferral: 1 week of After-School Detention

3rdReferral: Extended Day

4th Referral: Evening School or Saturday School and conference with an administrator

5th Referral: Out-of-School Suspension (1–2 days) and Parent and Student meet with an Administrator for signing of a Behavior Contract

6th Referral: Out-of-School Suspension (3 – 5 days)

7th +Referral/s: Out-of-School Suspension (3–5 days) with possible Principal’s Informal Conference and/or consideration for referral to OSMAP (or alternative school)

 

Bus Violations

Discipline procedures for bus violations include the following corrective measures:

 

1st Referral:         Assigned seat; placed on bus probation

2nd Referral:        Bus suspension for 2 days

3rd Referral:        Bus suspension for 1 week

4th Referral:        Bus suspension for 2 weeks

5th Referral:        Extended bus suspension or loss of bus                          privileges

                               

Riding an activity buses is a privilege for students participating in sports and clubs. One disciplinary referral received while riding the activity bus will result in a loss of activity bus privileges. 

The “Code of Behavior” violations below are the most serious and will result in an automatic disciplinary referral submitted to administration which will result in 1 – 5 days of Out-of-School Suspension (and up to 10 days, if approved by the Associate Superintendent.)

Additionally, parents may be required to conference with administration and/or teachers prior to a student’s return to classes.

 

CODE OF BEHAVIOR VIOLATIONS

  • Assault, Assault and Battery
  • Assault and/or Battery of a Teacher (blatant disrespect toward teacher/staff, profanity, written or spoken derogatory comments, threats, yelling, physical contact)
  • Bullying (physical contact, written or spoken threats, intimidation, ongoing teasing, etc., this includes Cyber bullying)
  • Destruction of Property
  • Fighting (Physical Altercation)
  • Harassment
  • Hazing
  • Group/mob assault
  • Sexual harassment (lewd comments, inappropriate touching, etc.) 
  • Substance Abuse or Possession (tobacco, alcohol, drugs, etc., including associated paraphernalia and/or placebos)
  •  Possession of Weapon or Look-alike
  • Theft
  • Threat (to bomb, burn, kill, seriously harm…)
  • Vandalism

Corrective Measures

In addition to 1 – 5 days of Out-of-School Suspension (and up to 10 days, if approved by the Mid-Level Associate Superintendent), the following corrective measures may be required:

 

  • Theft and destruction of property will also require full restitution and may be reported to the police. 
  • Certain offenses may also result in a referral to a corresponding PWCS program.
  • The most serious violations (denoted with a *) will also result in a Principal’s Informal Conference and/or Referral to OSMAP (for consideration of long-term suspension, alternative school placement or expulsion)

 

A student’s failure to comply with school rules and regulations may result in the school taking one or more of the following actions, in whatever order or manner the school deems appropriate.

 

Alternatives to Suspension
The GPMS administrative team is committed to meeting the unique needs of individual students throughout the disciplinary process. In an effort to promote non-exclusionary disciplinary practices, on a case by case basis, for non-violent, non-verbally abusive behavior the following alternatives to suspension may be considered:

 

After School Detention 

Students assigned detention will report to the designated staff member/assigned classroom from 3 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.  Students must bring books and other materials and work without talking or disturbing others.  Specific detention work relating to the misbehavior may also be assigned.  Parents are responsible for transportation.

 

 

Admonition
Warnings in the form of contracts, verbal or written understandings or agreements, and probation may be appropriate for some students.

 


Alternative Placement

 Student may be placed in an alternative setting within the school to complete assignments. 



 Assigned Tasks
 
Assignment of students to complete special tasks at school may be beneficial to the student and the school.


Confiscation of disruptive communication and entertainment devices
 Administration may take communication and entertainment devices that are disruptive to the learning environment. Confiscated devices must be picked up by parents unless other arrangements have been established by the administrator and parent.


Evening School

A student may be placed in Evening School as a consequence for inappropriate behavior.  Evening School will begin at 3 p.m. and end at 6 p.m.  The parent/guardian is responsible for transportation to and from school.  Disruptive behavior in Evening School will result in immediate removal and OSS.


Extended Day

 Students who are assigned an Extended Day will be required to attend school during the regular school day and then report to Evening School afterwards, which ends at 6 p.m. The parent/guardian is responsible for transportation from school.  

Local School Probation
 Probation may be considered for minor and infrequent offenses. Participation/attendance in extracurricular activities may be withdrawn. Copies of all discipline referrals resulting in probation shall be sent to the parent. The principal shall specify on the Discipline Referral Form the reason(s) for and the length of the probationary period.


Lunch Detention 

 To avoid writing a referral, any staff member may assign a student to lunch detention for minor disciplinary infractions. 

 

Mediation
This procedure is available to provide intervention and peaceful settlement of problems.

 

No Trespassing Order
In extreme cases, when directions of school personnel have been disregarded, a no trespassing order may be issued by the appropriate authorities.


Non-Participation in School-Sponsored Activities
 Restriction will be set for a fixed period of time or until certain specified requirements have been met. This corrective measure applies to all school-sponsored activities.


Restorative Practices
Restorative Practices build community and promote integrity within the school. Restorative practices will only be utilized with written consent of the parent/guardian of the child(ren) involved.  A specific description of the restorative practice will be shared with all involved individuals prior to implementation.

 

Saturday School
Consideration shall be given to other obligations of the student when detention is applied, and the parent shall be notified in advance of the extension of the student’s schedule. Parents are responsible for providing transportation for Saturday Suspension.

 


School Community Service Projects
Projects in and out of school may be assigned in lieu of other disciplinary action.

 

Student Behavior Contracts 

Students placed on a behavior contract by administration will become ineligible for certain privileges and extracurricular activities such as, but not limited to, assemblies, dances, and participation in athletic events.  Once placed on a behavior contract, future misconduct may result in a referral to OSMAP or recommendation to alternative school, long-term suspension or expulsion. 

 

Other Consequences

 Out of School Suspension

A student may be denied the right to attend school for up to five (5) days for serious offenses or for repeated incidents of misbehavior.  A five-day suspension can be extended with approval from the Middle School Associate Superintendent.  Students may also receive long-term suspensions which exceed ten days with approval from the Office of Student Management of Alternative Programs (OSMAP).

 

Expulsion

A student may be permanently denied the right to attend any Prince William County School when the individual is a potential danger to others or when the conduct of the individual disrupts learning.  An accumulation of referrals for which the student has been suspended may be grounds for expulsion.  Such

expulsions may be imposed or rescinded only by the School Board.  Violation of the substance abuse and/or weapon section of the Code of Behavior results in automatic recommendation for expulsion.
